Model for Establishing Values

Values are traits or qualities that represent an individual’s highest priorities and deeply held driving forces. (Values are also known as core values or governing values).

Value statements are values that define how people want to behave with each other. They are statements about how the organization will value customers, suppliers, and the internal community. The values of each individual in the organization are a mix of past experiences and upbringing melding together to form the corporate culture.

Why Identify and Establish Values?

Effective organizations identify and develop a clear, concise and shared meaning of values, beliefs, priorities, and a direction so that everyone understands how they can contribute. If you want the values to have an impact, the following must occur.

  • Values guide decisions in the organization.

  • Rewards and recognition are structured to recognize people whose work exemplifies the values of the organization.

  • Organizational goals are grounded in the identified values. Adoption of the values is recognized in performance feedback.

  • Hiring and promoting individuals whose actions are aligned with the values.

  • Active participation of all members of the organization will ensure an organization-wide, value-based, shared culture.
